Oat milk for breakfast or meat-free meatballs for dinner, many classic foods are now available in fully plant-based versions. Each year during Veganuary, we invite people to try something new and eat more consciously. With our vegan private label Vemondo, we make this choice simple for our customers all year round – and accessible to everyone.
The coffee machine hisses, the toast pops up – and instead of cheese, there’s hummus. More and more often, vegan alternatives are finding their way onto the breakfast table. Every January, many people start the year with plant-based foods. Welcome to Veganuary – the global campaign that encourages people to explore plant-based eating and lay the foundation for a year with more plant-based choices.
At Lidl, we take part every year, making it easy for our customers to explore new ways of eating – with vegetarian and vegan promotional items, recipe ideas and, of course, our Vemondo private label. Whether naturally vegan foods such as legumes and lentils, or plant-based alternatives for yoghurt, gyros or pizza, Lidl makes conscious eating practical, affordable and consistently delicious. Our range already includes around 650 plant-based alternatives.* In 2024, Vemondo won the V-Label Awards in Germany in the categories private label, meat and fish alternatives, as well as milk and dairy alternatives. Overall, Lidl offers more than 1,000 vegan products – and the number continues to grow.
Why is this important to us? Because plant-based foods have a lower carbon footprint due to reduced land use, while also supporting health. Choosing plant-based alternatives more often is therefore not only beneficial for individuals, but also contributes to environmental protection.
That is why Lidl is leading the way. As one of Europe’s largest food retailers, we are committed to making plant-based nutrition more accessible and affordable for everyone. And as the first food retailer in Germany, we offer almost the entire Vemondo range at the same price as comparable animal-based products – a true vegan price revolution for our customers.
"Plant-based nutrition should not be complicated or expensive. With Vemondo, we are showing that vegan alternatives are a real option for our customers."
But that’s not all. We are working to increase the share of plant-based proteins** in relation to animal-based protein sources in our product range by 2030. Lidl countries are setting their own targets to achieve this. To calculate the so-called protein split, we use the recognised methodology of our partner WWF. Our approach is guided by the scientific findings of the Planetary Health Diet, which recommends a more plant-based diet. Because whether once a month, once a week or every day, every plant-based choice counts. For the planet. For our health.
