Respecting Biodiversity

Protecting ecosystems and species diversity

The economy of the future can only be shaped in harmony with nature. Intact ecosystems and biodiversity are the foundation for food, fresh water, clean air and a stable climate. Yet we are witnessing a rapid decline in species, with the loss of pollinating insects alone posing a direct threat to food production. Across the globe, primary forests continue to be cleared to make way for agricultural land. At the same time, pressure on freshwater resources is increasing, particularly in regions affected by water scarcity or pollution. Periods of drought, combined with rising human water consumption, are further exacerbating the situation.

As a food retailer, we recognise that raw material production and other activities can have negative impacts on biodiversity. We therefore carry a particular responsibility to protect natural resources. Through our global reach, we are committed to preserving species-rich habitats.

Within our sphere of influence, we promote the use of sustainable farming methods for our private label products – traceable through established certifications and labels. In addition, we support projects that contribute positively to people, nature and the climate beyond our supply chain. In this way, we are shaping the path towards a liveable future – step by step.

Our ambition

We are committed to protecting biodiversity worldwide. Together with strong partners, we take action to preserve ecosystems and natural resources – within our value chain and beyond.

  • Protecting ecosystems and biodiversityWe are committed to the well-being of people, animals, and nature, as well as the preservation of biodiversity.

Progress to date

We are on the right track

Protecting biodiversity is an integral part of our sustainability strategy. Through certifications, the targeted establishment of standards and compliance with legal requirements, we have implemented concrete measures to preserve ecosystems and species diversity – and we continue to expand them step by step.

To protect biodiversity, we have worked together with GLOBALG.A.P., the Lake Constance Foundation and other key partners in the fruit and vegetable supply chain to develop a new add-on certification: the BioDiversity Add-on. It is the first industry-wide standard for biodiversity in conventional fruit and vegetable farming and has been available to all market participants since 2022. Lidl was the first food retailer to introduce the add-on into its supply chain. By 2025, more than 1,200 of our producers were already applying it across over 12,000 hectares of farmland in various European countries. Participating producers commit, among other things, to implementing biodiversity-enhancing measures on at least 3% of their agricultural land, increasing to 10% by 2030. The standard also excludes the use of neonicotinoids, a group of highly effective crop protection products.

Our spotlights

Small actions, big impact

It is often the concrete, everyday actions that make the difference. Our spotlights show how we at Lidl take responsibility for tomorrow – in a practical, effective and hands-on way.
