Responsibility. For today and tomorrow.

The world is changing—and we are evolving with it. As an international retail company, we see it as our responsibility to make the right decisions today for tomorrow. Our CSR strategy provides clear direction. It combines measurable milestones with concrete action—guiding us step by step along a well-founded path.

On a clear path

Our responsibility: staying the course with consistency

Tomorrow doesn’t start someday—it starts today. The major challenges of our time are already a reality: the climate crisis is intensifying, natural resources are becoming scarcer, and social inequalities are increasing. For Lidl, this means one thing: we take responsibility for our actions. Our answer is a CSR strategy designed to deliver real impact—for our customers, our partners, our employees and the ecosystems along our value chain. We have already achieved a great deal. And with clear targets and growing ambition, we are working to achieve even more.

Our foundation for tomorrow: transparent corporate governance and due diligence obligations

For us, economic success and responsible action go hand in hand. That is why we see corporate responsibility as a strategic mandate: with clear principles for due diligence and their firm integration throughout the company, we are already fulfilling our responsibility for tomorrow today.

What we do makes an impact

Our focus areas for real change

Responsibility is demonstrated in everyday actions. At Lidl, we focus on five key areas where we are setting the course for tomorrow today: protecting the climate, conserving resources, preserving biodiversity, promoting health and acting fairly. These form the core of our commitment. In each of these areas, we implement concrete measures—day by day, step by step, on the path to tomorrow. One principle guides us throughout: real progress can only be achieved together. That is why we actively engage in dialogue—with employees, suppliers, partners and stakeholders across society. In doing so, we create transparency, build trust and develop solutions.

Protecting climate

We reduce our CO₂ emissions today to preserve the foundations for tomorrow.

The climate crisis is here and requires decisive action. At Lidl, we have already begun: we rely on electricity from renewable sources, our own solar installations, lower-emission logistics and a broader range of plant-based alternatives to animal products in our assortment. Wherever we can reduce emissions as a company, we do so—because every reduction counts.

Conserving resources

Tomorrow knows no waste—only valuable resources.

Reducing plastic use, minimizing waste, closing loops: this is our ambition at Lidl. That is why we redesign packaging and consider recycling and reuse from the outset. In doing so, we live up to our responsibility as a global retail company and ensure that valuable materials remain in circulation and become resources for tomorrow after use.

Respecting biodiversity

Tomorrow grows from what we protect today.

Healthy ecosystems are the foundation of our lives and our economy. That is why Lidl is committed to protecting biodiversity and natural habitats — through traceable raw material sourcing and certified standards within our supply chain, such as Bioland, Rainforest Alliance or Fairtrade, we rigorously implement the legal requirements for deforestation-free supply chains. From cocoa to coffee, from soy to palm oil. Because only what is preserved today can continue to exist tomorrow.

Promoting health

Tomorrow calls for new impulses—on our plates as well.

Healthy nutrition is key to a good life and a powerful lever for a more future-proof food system. That is why, at Lidl, we are advancing plant-based alternatives and use the Nutri-Score as well as Fairtrade certifications to provide transparent guidance when shopping. In addition, we rigorously align our marketing for children's products with the nutritional criteria of the World Health Organization (WHO). In this way, we bring change to where it matters most—into our customers’ everyday lives.

Acting fairly

Tomorrow becomes fairer when we set standards today.

We are convinced that economic success is inseparable from social responsibility. That is why we are committed to responsible conduct—both within #teamlidl and throughout our value chain. To achieve this, we rely on binding standards such as our Code of Conduct, long-term partnerships and certified products.
