Conserving resources

Closing the loop, avoiding waste

In nature, there is no waste – only cycles. Instead of extracting, consuming and ultimately discarding valuable resources, our aim is to keep materials in circulation through circular approaches such as reuse and recycling. In doing so, we conserve resources, minimise waste and contribute to keeping materials within the loop.

As a global retail company, we share responsibility for the growing scarcity of natural resources. For us, it is clear: anyone who brings materials such as plastic into circulation must also take responsibility for their continued use. We embrace this responsibility and take action across our entire value chain – from raw material sourcing and production to logistics and recycling. Our goal is always to use resources more efficiently, reduce waste and close material loops.

Our measures contribute to the Schwarz Group’s jointly developed circular economy strategy REset Resources. In line with this strategy, we are implementing Lidl-specific initiatives and actively shaping the transition towards a resource-efficient and future-proof economy – step by step. For our customers, for our planet and for a resource-resilient Europe.

Our ambition

We promote resource efficiency through concrete circular projects and bring together international partners to drive efficiency and innovation. Together, we further develop standards, reduce resource consumption and close loops across the entire value chain.

Progress to date

We are on the right track

From operational waste to private label packaging, Lidl is systematically working to avoid waste, keep materials in circulation and reduce environmental impact. Initial results from pilot projects in individual countries and packaging optimisations demonstrate that the transition to a circular economy is achievable.

As part of our Road to Zero Waste initiative, Lidl Czech Republic, Lidl Netherlands, and Lidl Ireland have already limited the proportion of non-recyclable operational waste to a maximum of 5%. This will be implemented in all Lidl countries by 2030. In addition, the three countries, as well as Lidl Northern Ireland, have been awarded the “Road to Zero Waste” Gold Certification by TÜV SÜD. This makes them the first retailers in their respective countries to be certified according to the DIN SPEC 91436 standard. This certification is the result of their long-standing commitment to waste prevention (using as little material as possible), reuse, and recycling.

Small actions, big impact

It is often the concrete, everyday actions that make the difference. Our spotlights show how we at Lidl take responsibility for tomorrow – in a practical, effective and hands-on way.
